PIERRE, S.D. (Oct. 7, 2025) – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has publicly praised President Donald Trump’s nomination of Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Director Dan Satterlee as the next U.S. Marshal for South Dakota.

“Dan is a strong law enforcement officer, and he was my choice as DCI director when I became Attorney General in 2023,” Jackley said. “He has been an excellent leader for DCI, and he will do the same as U.S. Marshal. I look forward to continuing our working relationship in his new position.”

Jackley recommended Satterlee for the federal post, a recommendation that was supported by South Dakota Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds before being accepted by President Trump.

“President Trump, Senate Leader Thune, and Senator Rounds are strong advocates of law enforcement and public safety, and this nomination reaffirms that,” Jackley said.

Satterlee’s nomination has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration. If approved by the committee, the nomination will then move to the full Senate for a final vote. The news has drawn attention across the state, including in the Black Hills and Rapid City areas, as Satterlee is a key figure in South Dakota law enforcement.

Satterlee previously served the DCI as Administrative Assistant Director and Field Operations Assistant Director. Before his role as DCI Director, he was the Coordinator for the South Dakota Fusion Center, an agency focused on compiling, analyzing, and disseminating criminal intelligence. Satterlee is a South Dakota State University graduate and a former Corrections Officer and Army Reserve Master Sergeant, bringing a diverse background in law enforcement and the military to the position.
