Roger Goodell: No formal talks with union about adding 18th NFL game

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said there have been no discussions with the union about adding an 18th game to the season and said lengthening the season again was not inevitable. The NFL added a 17th game in 2021 and Goodell has expressed interest in the past about adding an 18th game in place of one of the three exhibition games each team plays every season. Goodell said a number of issues would have to be discussed with the union before an 18th game was added, including whether a second bye week was needed and the size of rosters.

Goodell: NFL must re-evaluate minority hiring after just 1 head coaching job went to a minority

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league needs to re-evaluate its approach to minority hiring after an offseason coaching cycle that saw only one of 10 head coaching jobs go to a minority and none to Black candidates. There are slated to be only three Black head coaches in the NFL next season. There were 10 head coach openings this season and none of them were filled by a Black coach. Robert Saleh, who is of Lebanese descent, was the only minority to get a job when he was hired by Tennessee.

Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar has filed a lawsuit as he bids for an extra year of eligibility that would allow him to play this fall. The complaint filed in Knox County Chancery Court in Tennessee argues that Aguilar should be allowed a fourth year of playing Division I football rather than having the years he spent in junior college count against his eligibility. Aguilar played at Diablo Valley (California) Community College from 2021-22 before spending the 2023-24 seasons at Applachian State. He completed 67.3% of his passes for 3,565 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for Tennessee in 2025.

The Republican National Committee vastly outpaced Democrats in 2025, according to year-end filings to the Federal Election Commission. As Democrats have struggled, the RNC tallied $172 million in 2025, with $95 million cash on hand at year’s end. In contrast, the Democratic National Committee posted $145 million for the year, with $14 million on hand, but $17 million in debt, to start the new year underwater. It all points to competitive campaigns ahead. Trump and his Republican Party are fighting political headwinds that tend to brush back the party in power during midterm elections that determine control of Congress.

Longtime Penguins defenseman Kris Letang out at least a month due to fractured foot

The surging Pittsburgh Penguins will have to find a way forward without longtime defenseman Kris Letang. The 20-year veteran is out a minimum of four weeks with a fractured foot. Penguins coach Dan Muse says Letang was injured during a 6-2 win over Chicago on Jan. 29. The 38-year-old Letang has three goals and 22 assists this season for the Penguins, who have points in their last eight games to surge into second place in the Metropolitan Division. The good news for Letang and the Penguins is the league will take a three-week break for the 2026 Olympics, meaning he may not miss more than a handful of games.

Judge says she won’t halt the immigration enforcement surge as a lawsuit proceeds

A federal judge says she won’t halt the immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota and the Twin Cities as a lawsuit over it proceeds. Judge Katherine M. Menendez on Saturday denied a preliminary injunction sought in a lawsuit filed this month by state Attorney General Keith Ellison and the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul. It argued that the Department of Homeland Security is violating constitutional protections. The lawsuit sought a quick order to halt the enforcement action or limit its scope. Lawyers with the U.S. Department of Justice have called the lawsuit “legally frivolous.” Federal officers have fatally shot two people on the streets of Minneapolis: Renee Good on Jan. 7 and Alex Pretti on Jan. 24.

NASCAR delays preseason race at Bowman Gray Stadium to Monday

NASCAR has postponed the preseason exhibition race at Bowman Gray Stadium until Monday night because of ice and snow in the Winston-Salem area of North Carolina. The Clash was initially planned as a two-day event starting Saturday, with the main race on Sunday evening. NASCAR already had reduced it to a Sunday-only event, anticipating bad weather. Snow blanketed the Carolinas on Saturday, leading to the decision to move the race to Monday. The roads around Winston-Salem remain uncleared from last weekend’s ice storm. NASCAR said parking lots for fans will open at 9 a.m., with practice and qualifying scheduled for 11 a.m.

Florida sets up a third execution in 2026 as state leads US death penalty surge

A man convicted of fatally shooting a police officer during a traffic stop is set to be Florida’s third execution of 2026. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a death warrant Thursday for 53-year-old Billy Leon Kearse. He is scheduled to die by lethal injection March 3 at Florida State Prison. DeSantis, a Republican, oversaw more executions in a single year in 2025 than any other Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The previous record was eight executions in 2014. DeSantis says he wants to bring justice to victims’ families who have waited decades for the death sentences to be carried out. Kearse was initially sentenced in 1991.

Cooper Flagg breaks NBA teen record with 49 points in Mavs’ loss to Hornets

As Dallas rookie Cooper Flagg set the NBA record for points by a teenager with 49 on Thursday night in a 123-121 loss to Charlotte, he broke the franchise rookie scoring record he shared with Mark Aguirre — whose jersey was retired at halftime. Flagg turned 19 in December. Also special for the No. 1 draft pick last summer from Duke was playing his first NBA game against Kon Knueppel, his roommate as Blue Devils freshmen. Knueppel had a career-high 34 points, hitting the two winning free throws with 4.1 seconds left after being fouled by Flagg. Cliff Robinson set the previous NBA teen record of 45 at age 19 for New Jersey in a game against Detroit on March 9, 1980.
