Minnesota Democrats are demanding a broader investigation into Renee Good’s shooting

Two of Minnesota’s leading Democrats say the investigation into the fatal shooting of a woman by a federal immigration officer shouldn’t be handled solely by the federal government. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and U.S. Sen. Tina Smith said in separate interviews Sunday that state investigators need to be included in the investigation. Both say a broader investigation is needed because the Trump administration already has made it clear that they believe the officer who shot Renee Good in her car was protecting himself and fellow agents. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is dismissing the complaints about local agencies being denied any participation in the investigation.

Trump invited to give State of the Union address on Feb. 24

Speaker Mike Johnson has invited President Donald Trump to give his first State of the Union of his second term on Feb. 24. The invitation sent Wednesday notes that the nation is marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The invitation touted the work of Trump and a Republican-led Congress in 2025 and pointed to the year ahead. The address will give Trump the chance to shape the GOP’s message to voters going into a mi-term election that will determine whether Republicans maintain control of Congress. Democrats hope this year to win one or both chambers and gain the ability to better confront Trump’s legislative agenda.

After just two and half weeks of release, the Sydney Sweeney box-office hit “The Housemaid” is getting a sequel. Lionsgate announced Tuesday that it will start production on “The Housemaid’s Secret” later this year. The film will be based on the second of Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy of books. “The Housemaid” has been a hit at the holiday box office, grossing more than $75 million and $133 million worldwide in 17 days. The film has handed Sweeney a major box-office victory after a disappointing result for her awards-hopeful “Christy” in November. That film grossed just $2 million worldwide.

Saks CEO steps down as luxury retailer struggles under heavy debt load

Saks Global Enterprises, which operates Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, said Friday its CEO Marc Metrick stepped down, effective immediately. The company has been grappling with debt and increasing competition from different luxury players. Richard Baker, Executive Chairman of Saks Global, will take the CEO title. He will continue to serve as Executive Chairman. In a statement, Saks said Metrick left to pursue new opportunities. Hudson’s Bay Co., the Canada-based owner of Saks Fifth Avenue, split off the luxury retailer’s e-commerce business, Saks.com in 2021. In 2024, the spinoff acquired Neiman Marcus for $2.65 billion and changed its name to Saks Global.

Suspect in national guard shooting faces new federal charges that allow death penalty discussions

A man accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House is charged in a complaint with federal firearms charges over the ambush on November 26 that fatally wounded one of the West Virginia National Guard members and seriously injured the second. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, has been charged with transporting a firearm in interstate commerce with the intent to commit an offense punishable for more than one year. He also also been charged federally with transporting a stolen firearm in interstate commerce. San Diego considers $30 million settlement in police-involved shooting death of Black teen

The San Diego city attorney’s office has agreed to pay $30 million to the family of a 16-year-old youth who was fatally shot by police last January in what would be one of the largest settlements of a police-involved killing case in U.S. history. A 1940 self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, titled “El sueño (La cama),” could make auction history Thursday at Sotheby’s in New York. With an estimated price of $40 million to $60 million, it may surpass the record for a female artist’s work, currently held by Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1” at $44.4 million. What to know about 10% reduction in flights at U.S. airports caused by the government shutdown

Adam Sandler will be the next recipient of AARP’s Movies for Grownups career achievement award. The group cited his ability to move masterfully from classic comedy roles to serious drama. Latino leaders are expressing dismay over recent immigration enforcement operations in Chicago. The incidents include a fatal shooting during a traffic stop, the arrest of an immigrant at a barbershop and a standoff between protesters and agents at an immigration processing facility. Pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions draws signatures of top Hollywood actors and directors

Some prominent Hollywood figures have signed onto a pledge to boycott certain Israeli film institutions. The group Film Workers for Palestine posted an open letter calling for a boycott of institutions that it says are “implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.” It includes signatures from Emma Stone, Ayo Edebiri, Ava DuVernay, Olivia Colman, Yorgos Lanthimos, Riz Ahmed, Rob Delaney, Javier Bardem, Tilda Swinton, and Cynthia Nixon among many others. The group says it has collected more than 3,000 signatures. It has not called for a boycott on all Israeli film institutions, and says it is targeting only institutions and not Israeli individuals.

The State Department has formally advised staffers that it will be sending layoff notices to some of them soon. It comes as part of dramatic changes to the agency that the Trump administration announced earlier this year. The workforce cuts and reorganization of the country’s diplomatic corps are part of a wider effort to reduce the size of the federal government. A recent ruling by the Supreme Court cleared the way for the layoffs to start. Critics say the scale of cuts floated at the State Department would lessen U.S. influence globally and make it hard for many offices to carry out their missions.
