RAPID CITY, SD—Rapid City Public Works staff is continuing to work with the contractor on the South Street construction project to maintain access on Election Day next Tuesday to the Eleventh Street polling location at West Park Apartments.

Since late September, crews with Halme, Inc. have been installing a new water main and storm sewer with roadway reconstruction on a section of South Street in Rapid City. South Street remains closed from 12th Street to West Boulevard.  The closure created concerns about accessibility to West Park Apartments polling location on Election Day.

City Engineer Roger Hall and staff have been meeting with the contractor regarding access to the polling location at West Park Apartments for Tuesday’s Election Day. The plan includes:

•  Parking on Eleventh Street (11th) and Fulton Street will be maintained.

•  City staff has developed a map displaying the parking locations near the polling location (see attached).

•  South Street will remain closed and under construction.

•  Temporary lighting will be set up to illuminate the entrance during the early morning hours and evening on Tuesday.

•  City construction inspectors will be on site to assist if anyone has difficulty accessing the site.

“In addition, City staff has met with the polling place supervisor and the ‘Vote Here’ signs will be placed under his direction,” said Hall. “He is aware of our plan and believes it is adequate. We will continue to work on the plan, share details and modify if necessary as Tuesday approaches.”

Project completion is scheduled for November 20
