The Hereford Volunteer Fire Department is gearing up for its second annual Coyote Calling Contest set for January 17-18, 2025. This exciting event aims to raise funds crucial for the operations of the volunteer department, which covers a vast area of approximately 245,000 acres, located 36 miles east of Sturgis, South Dakota.
The event will kick off with a freewill pancake feed on the evening of January 17 at the newly expanded fire hall. Participants can enjoy a hearty meal, get acclimated with the rules, and register for the hunts. It’s important for at least one team member to be present during the registration process. Following the pancake feed and rules meeting, night hunters will have their chance to hit the fields.
On January 18th, the day hunt will take place, where teams will compete to weigh in their three heaviest coyotes. In addition to the main contest, there will be exciting side pots, including categories for the “Ugly Dog” and “Small Dog,” ensuring everyone has the opportunity to win prizes regardless of their hunts.
Registration fees range from $100 for the day hunt to $150 for the night hunt, with side pot entries available at an additional cost. Contestants will automatically be entered into a raffle for an A.R. fifteen twenty-two rifles donated by Kings Custom Arms, specifically for participants’ appreciation.
Local businesses have shown tremendous support, contributing over $1,750 in added prizes and door prizes for the event. Raffles and silent auctions will also take place, with items ranging from firearms to gift certificates donated by various local sponsors.
In addition to the thrill of the coyote hunt, the event serves as an opportunity for community members to come together in support of their local fire department. Those interested in participating or attending are encouraged to check the Hereford Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page for further details or contact Jake at 605-490-9862 or Dusty at 605-484-5112.
