RCPD Officer was Justified in Shooting

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says a South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) review indicates that a Rapid City Police Department Officer was justified in a shooting that occurred Nov. 1, in Rapid City. The incident began when Rapid City Police were notified of a male individual, identified as Jesse Warbonnett, 27, of Rapid City, pointing a pistol at passing vehicles, businesses, and people at the intersection of Haines Avenue and Anamosa Street. Warbonnett, who refused commands to surrender, pointed the pistol at two Rapid City Police officers who were located near the apartment. One of the officers shot Warbonnett through the apartment’s sliding glass door. Warbonnett was later pronounced deceased at a Rapid City hospital. Lab results indicate that Warbonnett also tested positive for methamphetamine.

Sponsor of Abortion Rights Amendment G calling on legislators to Pass Exemptions Bill

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The sponsor of abortion rights Amendment G is calling on South Dakota legislators to pass an abortion exemptions bill. Co-founder of Dakotans for Health, Rick Weiland, has made his case with lawmakers to invoke the “emergency clause” to pass the bill during the upcoming legislative session. In his statement last week, Weiland said, “The extreme abortion ban in South Dakota strips women of their basic freedoms and threatens our state’s medical professionals with imprisonment for providing the care they were trained to deliver.” He added South Dakota women victimized by rape or incest, or those facing a fatal fetal abnormality, should not be forced to carry those pregnancies to term.

Details emerge about suspect charged with murder in killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Court records show New York prosecutors have charged a man with murder in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO. Luigi Nicholas Mangione is being held without bail Tuesday in Pennsylvania after he was arrested and arraigned on gun, forgery and other charges the day before. He is expected to be extradited to New York eventually. It’s unclear whether the 26-year-old Mangione has an attorney who can comment on his behalf. Authorities say he was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a McDonald’s customer noticed another patron who resembled the man in security-camera photos that New York police had publicized.

Middle East latest: Netanyahu testifies in his corruption trial as Israel bombs sites in Syria

Israeli warplanes have pounded military sites in Syria after Israeli troops seized a border buffer zone following the collapse of President Bashar Assad’s rule. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meanwhile testified in his long-running corruption trial. Israel denied its forces were advancing toward Damascus. Israeli troops on Sunday entered the buffer zone that had been established after the 1973 Mideast war and the military said it would deploy in several other places necessary for Israel’s defense.

Biden is rushing aid to Ukraine. Both sides are digging in. And everyone is bracing for Trump

The grinding war pitting Ukraine against its Russian invaders has escalated ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration. President Joe Biden is rushing out billions more in military aid before U.S. support for Kyiv’s defenses is thrown into question under the new administration. Russia, Ukraine and their global allies are scrambling to put their side in the best possible position for any changes that Trump may bring to American policy in the nearly 3-year-old war. The president-elect insisted in recent days that Russia and Ukraine immediately reach a ceasefire, and said Ukraine should likely prepare to receive less U.S. military aid. A Ukrainian military commander says his forces will keep fighting but when the aid runs out, they’ll be destroyed.

Cancer-causing chemicals

The EPA announced a ban on trichloroethylene (TCE) and significant restrictions on perchloroethylene (PCE), two chemicals linked to cancer. TCE, widely used in manufacturing, and PCE, common in industries like dry cleaning and auto repair, will now face tight controls due to health risks. The EPA emphasized safer alternatives for these applications. However, these regulations could be overturned by Congress under the Congressional Review Act if challenged during the next administration.
