PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS), working with the Opioid Advisory Committee, has launched an updated Opioid Settlement Funding Framework designed to give more communities and organizations greater resources to fight opioid misuse.
DSS Cabinet Secretary Matt Althoff stated the new approach encourages local cooperation and establishes clear expectations for showing results through data. “We also streamlined the application process in response to community feedback and in recognition of the increase in available settlement funds,” Althoff said in a statement. “We continue to welcome proposals that fill gaps in community resources and improve outcomes for South Dakotans.”
The new framework offers a wider range of award amounts to support both small and large projects, aiming for a more predictable flow of funds to reinforce existing prevention, treatment, recovery, and relapse reduction efforts that align with South Dakota’s statewide plan.
Key Program Updates
The updated framework includes several improvements to simplify the process and broaden the scope of support:
- Three distinct funding opportunities have been created, tailored to different project scopes. Sources indicate these may be categorized as Resource Grants (up to $5,000), Organizational Grants (up to $50,000), and Transformative Grants (more than $50,000).
- A streamlined online application process is now in place.
- The focus is on identifying a specific problem or gap and encouraging innovative solutions.
- Technical assistance is available for applicants.
Eligible applicants include state agencies, counties and municipalities, non-profits, mental health and healthcare providers, schools, tribal entities, faith-based organizations, and other groups supporting opioid recovery and prevention.Â
