Most Glass in S.D. Still Ends Up in Landfills, Data Show

UNDATED – Most glass bottles and jars in South Dakota still end up in landfills.

That’s according to the state’s latest recycling report and reporting by Northern Plains News.

Glass recycling fell to just one-tenth of one percent last year.

Most towns don’t accept glass, and long hauls to Kansas City or Denver drive up costs.

The EPA says the weight of glass makes shipping expensive, especially from rural areas.

Ball Corporation found that only one in 11 bottles gets recycled in Nebraska.

According to city data, Omaha saved more than $160,000 in landfill fees last year by recycling glass locally.

Unless policy or market changes come, glass will keep going into the trash.
