SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Four people died Monday in a three-vehicle crash that happened near Colman. Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2020 Ford Ranger was traveling northbound on I-29 in the southbound lanes near mile marker 119. At the same time, the driver of a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling southbound on the interstate. The driver of the Dodge began passing a 2017 Peterbilt 389 semi-truck, who was also southbound, and was unable to avoid the Ford traveling in the wrong direction. The Dodge and the Ford collided head-on. The Dodge was then struck by the Peterbilt, causing the semi to jackknife. All four occupants of the Dodge were ejected from the vehicle. The 15-year-old female driver and two of her passengers, ages 12 and 16, sustained fatal injuries. The third passenger, age 12, was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital with life threatening injuries. The 88-year-old male driver of the Ford was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured. I-29’s southbound lanes were closed for approximately six hours. Names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members. The investigation is ongoing.
