SPEARFISH, S.D. - Despite controlling the offensive attack throughout Wednesday night at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex, the Black Hills State University women's soccer team was unable to pull the upset of No. 16 Regis as they fell to the RMAC regular season champions by a score of 2-0. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Rangers 24-7 in total attempts and 12-4 in shots on goal; however, a momentum swing midway through the second half proved enough for Regis to complete an unbeaten league record. The action began right from the start as Kylea Becker and Ivy Agee each tallied a shot on goal in the 4th and 7th minutes respectively. Agee's shot was the result of an attacking opportunity where Ally Boysen drew over a pair of defenders before passing the ball to Agee, who was one-on-one with Payne, who proceeded to make a diving save at the left post. Boysen added shots on goal in the 25th and 29th minutes, while Samantha Nunez recorded a shot on frame int he 38th minute. Another strong scoring opportunity from Agee occurred in the 39th minute as she changed directions back into the middle of the field at the top of the box and fired a strike towards the upper right corner of the net, forcing Payne to make a leaping grab. Boysen then notched the final shot on target of the opening half with a shot towards the bottom right corner of the net in the 40th minute. Another key scoring opportunity came in the 60th minute as Boysen took a pass into the box, got past the back line of the defense, and fired a shot towards the right post that initially got past Payne and as the ball slowly rolled within inches of the goal line with Peyton Hill charging as well; however, it was knocked away and off the end line at the last second by Addysen Gasser for a Yellow Jacket corner kick. Minutes later, Regis was able to break the scoreless tie on their first shot on goal opportunity in the 64th minute. With a quick counterattack off a strong pass forward from Payne to Fernanda Rodriguez and Paula Igual, Igual made a quick pass forward to Brooke Castillo who used her momentum towards the center of the net to put the ball into the goal for the 1-0 advantage. Despite the Ranger goal, the Yellow Jackets continued to keep the pressure on the Regis defense as Aubri Roth and Becker placed shots on goal in the 65th and 69th minutes. Becker's shot attempt was a strike from the top right corner of the box, which ricocheted back out into the field of play off the top of the woodwork. Regis tallied their second goal off just their second shot on target in the 74th minute as Castillo worked her way into the right side of the box and sent a cross pass into the middle of the box to Rodriguez, who then placed the ball into the left side of the net to give the Rangers a 2-0 advantage. With momentum swinging into the direction of the Rangers, Rian Barthel made a pair of saves in the ensuing minutes, first stopping a shot from Quinn Quinabo in the 76th minute and another from Rodriguez in the 79th minute to keep it a 2-0 game. Black Hills State's final opportunities came in the 86th and 89th minutes as Agee sent a shot towards the right post from the top of the box and Zoe Evans took control of the ball in the box off a free kick and fired a shot towards the left side of the net, forcing Payne to make a diving deflection to keep the score at 2-0. Black Hills State held the advantage in shot attempts (24-7) and shots on goal (12-4), while Regis held the edge in corner kicks (5-3) and saves (12-2).
