RAPID CITY, SD – The Rapid City Central Cobblers volleyball team delivered an exciting senior night performance Tuesday, battling the Spearfish Spartans through five intense sets before securing a hard-fought victory at Central High School.
With the match on the line, both teams fought for every point, trading powerful spikes, clutch blocks and aces in a back-and-forth battle that kept the pressure on until the final moments.
Central came out swinging in the first set, scoring the opening three points and building momentum. Senior Leah Landry (#15) delivered multiple powerful spikes, while Elsa Tibke (#9) added attacks of her own. Dream Niedringhaus (#7) helped the Cobblers at the net with a key block as Central claimed the opening set.
Spearfish answered in the second set, using strong serves and aggressive attacks to even the match. Megan Markovetz (#4) and the Spartans’ other servers helped put pressure on Central, while Landry continued finding scoring opportunities. Spearfish pulled through to take the set and shift the momentum.
The Cobblers responded in the third set with another strong performance. Tibke (#9) and Niedringhaus (#7) came through with important spikes, while Central continued finding ways to score through tips and blocks. The Cobblers regained the lead in the match by winning the set.
However, the Spartans refused to back down. Spearfish fought through the fourth set with key aces, blocks and kills, including contributions from Addison Keller (#20), Layla Meredith (#5) and Lily Rath (#8). Their effort forced a deciding fifth set.
With the match coming down to overtime, Central and Spearfish traded points in a tense finish. Landry (#15) and Tibke (#9) delivered crucial spikes, while Emme Simmons (#11) added an ace. Central kept fighting through the Spartans’ attacks and found the points it needed to finish the match with a victory.
The night was about more than just a win. Central celebrated two seniors, Leah Landry (#15) and Braelynn Brown (#8), honoring the time, effort and memories they have given to Cobblers volleyball. As they look ahead to the next chapter of their lives, their teammates, families and fans had a chance to celebrate everything they have accomplished together.
One of the most special moments came after the final point, when both seniors’ parents stepped onto the court to set a ball to their daughters. Leah and Braelynn each had a chance to spike or send the ball over the net, sharing one last volleyball moment with the people who have supported them along the way. It was a simple gesture, but one filled with meaning — a reminder that behind every practice, every game and every hard-fought point were parents cheering them on.
For Landry and Brown, senior night was a chance to look back on the memories, friendships and lessons volleyball has given them. And for their families, it was a moment to celebrate how far their daughters have come. Ending the night with a five-set victory made the evening even more memorable, giving the Cobblers a finish they could celebrate together. The final score mattered, but the memories made on the court with their families were what made this senior night truly special.
