RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Monday that the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is looking into the suspected drug overdose death of an inmate at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield. This investigation highlights the ongoing challenges with substance abuse within the state’s correctional facilities.
Timothy Tyree, 46, was found deceased early Monday morning at the prison. An autopsy has been ordered as part of the investigative process.
“These suspected drug overdose deaths are becoming too common within our prison system,” Attorney General Jackley said. “The DCI and Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General will do a thorough investigation of this death. If criminal charges are warranted, we will announce them at the proper time.”
This marks the seventh death of a South Dakota prison inmate that DCI has investigated since February. Two of those previous cases have led to criminal felony charges, with jury trials scheduled for January.
