New A1C Health Screen Offered to Black Hills Blood Donors

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The nonprofit Vitalant is offering a free hemoglobin A1C test to all blood donors throughout September. This new test provides an extra check on donor health while helping to save lives.

The hemoglobin A1C test, which provides a two to three-month snapshot of blood sugar levels, can help detect prediabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one in three adults have prediabetes, a condition that can often be reversed with lifestyle changes. Unmanaged diabetes can lead to serious complications.
More than 1 in 3 U.S. adults have pre-diabetes.

“A hemoglobin A1C test can give those who may be at risk of developing diabetes a chance at early intervention,” said Dr. Ralph Vassallo, Vitalant chief medical and scientific officer. “Donating blood is a lifesaver for patients. Learning valuable health information can be empowering for donors.”

Donors can check their confidential A1C test results, along with other wellness information like cholesterol, in their online Vitalant account within seven days of their donation. Vitalant encourages donors to discuss these results with a healthcare provider. People with well-managed diabetes are still eligible to donate blood if they meet other requirements.

Blood donors of all types are needed year-round to support the blood supply. Type O blood is especially important as it can be used for the most patients. Platelets are also in constant demand, most often used to help cancer patients.
