Rapid City Downtown Summer Nights
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Tuesday, a Summer Nights presentation was given to Rapid City’s Public Works Committee to examine the Summer Nights Board’s special event permit. If approved by City Council, the application would allow Summer Nights to continue operating on 7th street between St. Joseph and Main streets for another year until they can find a new location for the weekly festival. Several businesses are making complaints about the community event, primarily over downtown parking. The council will discuss the Summer Nights issue on Monday.
Sturgis Teacher License Revoked
PIERRE, S.D. – A former Sturgis teacher has had his license permanently revoked following decisions made this week by the State Education Department. Chris West was one of two west river teachers to have their licenses revoked. State Education Secretary Joseph Graves says West had his license revoked after he came to work intoxicated. During the state investigation, West said he was resigning and leaving education. The license of St. Francis Indian School counselor Keiton Guess was revoked after a domestic incident at his home where he allegedly assaulted a woman he was seeing and “caused a serious likelihood of injury to his daughter.”
CEO murder investigation
The case involving Luigi Mangione, arrested in Pennsylvania for the alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has taken a significant turn. Police announced that the 3D-printed gun found with Mangione matches three 9mm shell casings recovered from the Manhattan crime scene. Notably, each shell casing bore the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose,” which align with the title of a 2010 book critical of the insurance industry—a potential lead in determining Mangione’s motive. Additionally, authorities confirmed Mangione’s fingerprints on items near the December 4 murder scene. His lawyer expressed skepticism, stating he will evaluate the police’s evidence for “truthfulness” and “accuracy.” The investigation continues as police delve deeper into Mangione’s potential connections to the case and possible motives.
Drone Mystery
Weeks of mysterious drone sightings across New Jersey are prompting heightened security concerns — and mounting frustrations — from residents, military personnel and federal, state and local officials. Law enforcement has not identified the origin or landing sites of the drones but emphasized there is no threat to public safety. Mayor Michael Melham of Belleville Township said the drones primarily operate at night, often displaying flashing lights, but they turn off the lights and evade police helicopters when approached. Some members of Congress have speculated that a foreign entity may be involved in the drones, something the Pentagon quickly rebuffed Wednesday.
Middle East latest: Israeli airstrikes kill 28 in Gaza, including 7 children, health officials say
Palestinian medical officials say Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 28 people in the Gaza Strip, including seven children and a woman, hours after the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire. One of the strikes overnight and into Thursday flattened a house in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp, according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the nearby city of Deir al-Balah, where the casualties were taken. Two other strikes killed 15 men who were part of local committees established to secure aid convoys. Health officials in Gaza say the war has killed more than 44,800 Palestinians.
Trump is named Time’s Person of the Year and rings the New York Stock Exchange’s opening bell
President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognized by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honors Thursday for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump’s remarkable comeback from an ostracized former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. At the stock exchange, Trump was accompanied by his wife, Melania Trump, daughters Ivanka and Tiffany and Vice President-elect JD Vance. Trump grinned as people chanted “USA” before he opened the trading day and raised his fist.
