RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Swearingen Metroliner turboprop airplane turned some heads Thursday morning in Rapid City, but it wasn’t in the air.
The plane was actually being towed to Rapid City Regional Airport. And, because it wasn’t flying, it took a unique approach to get it around the fencing that surrounds the airport.
The plane was towed up Radar Hill Road to the airport, where airport staff had to use a crane to lift the aircraft over the fencing.
Airport staff says this aircraft is registered to the US Army Corps and it will no longer be used for standard commercial passenger travel.
The move up Radar Hill Road got some interested people snapping pictures of the Metroliner, which, in turn, popped up on social media channels.
Airport staff said “moving a plane by road is no small task, it definitely takes a lot of coordination! In this case, the aircraft owner was responsible for towing logistics and costs.”
