DEADWOOD, S.D. – A Wyoming man was arrested late Tuesday afternoon following a standoff on the Deadwood Mountain Grand parking ramp.

According to a release from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and the Spearfish Police Department were conducting a domestic violence investigation in the morning when the suspect, 31 – year – old Darryk Shrader of Newcastle, fled on Highway 85. The pursuit was joined by Deadwood and Lead police departments and at one time, tire spikes were deployed in an attempt to stop the suspect vehicle. Later in the day the vehicle was found wrecked in a wooded area south of Lead.

A second vehicle owned by Shrader was located on the top floor of the Deadwood Mountain Grand parking ramp. When a Deadwood police officer approached the vehicle, she noticed a man barricaded inside, holding a gun.

Officers secured the scene while other responding officers from both departments closed the parking ramp and notified surrounding businesses to stay inside. While officers worked to deescalate the armed barricaded subject, the Lawrence County Buildings were closed and alternate pickup sites were established for Deadwood Elementary School students.

Shrader eventually surrendered just before 5 p.m. and was taken to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation for the original assault, pursuit and incident at the parking ramp.
