PIERRE, S.D. (SDBA) — The South Dakota Legislature unanimously confirmed Tony Venhuizen as the state’s new Lieutenant Governor today (Thursday), with the House voting 67-0 and the Senate 35-0.
Venhuizen was sworn in following the votes and will serve as President of the Senate.
During the House debate, legislators from both parties praised Venhuizen’s experience and knowledge of state government.
“Tony has a deep knowledge of policy and rules and procedure, and he, as we all know, is incredibly passionate about history and government,” said Rep. Healy, D-Sioux Falls. “He’s a great appropriator. He ensures responsible and effective stewardship of our taxpayer dollars.”
Representative Liz May, R-Kyle, reflected on their evolving relationship over years of working together in the Capitol.
“I can honestly say I like Tony now. I like him a lot. I couldn’t have said that a lot of years ago,” May said. “I did not like Tony. I always felt like Tony was picking on us,” she laughed.
May also admitted Venhuizen was effective.
Venhuizen previously served as chief of staff to former Governors Dennis Daugaard and Kristi Noem. The former Sioux Falls state representative has worked extensively with the state legislature, particularly on the Appropriations Committee.
He fills the vacancy created when former Lt. Governor Larry Rhoden became Governor following Noem’s resignation.
