Update August 8: The firearm taken in connection with a stolen vehicle on August 5th has been recovered. Police located the firearm in the possession of two juveniles who were caught after shoplifting ammunition at 1001 E. Mall Drive on August 6th.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Police Department is investigating the theft of a Jeep SUV and a handgun after a vehicle was reported stolen from downtown Rapid City on August 5.

According to a police department report, officers were dispatched to 518 Main Street, parking garage, around 8:00 p.m. after a vehicle was reported missing. The owner told police they had left the Jeep unattended with the key fob inside. When they returned, the vehicle was gone.

The owner also reported that a loaded handgun and other personal belongings were inside the vehicle at the time of the theft.

Police are currently reviewing security footage from the area as part of the ongoing investigation. No further details have been released at this time. The incident serves as a reminder for residents and visitors in the Black Hills area to secure their vehicles and valuables.
