STURGIS, S.D. – Triple A South Dakota is expecting Independence Day travel to be as robust as ever. With most South Dakotans driving to their holiday destinations, AAA urges travelers to buckle up, stay sober, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

Inflation is at its lowest level since 2020, while gas prices are the cheapest they’ve been in four years. But this year’s fireworks displays may look a little different and could be more costly. That’s because 99% of fireworks sold in the US come from China, which are facing tariffs of 30%.

After five years of pandemic-fueled inflation, the increase in the cost of a Fourth of July barbecue is back to normal this year. A meal for 10 people with all the traditional July 4th offerings will cost $130, up 2.2% from last year, according to a report from Wells Fargo. The bank analyzed the prices of barbecue staples like chicken, beef sliders, eggs, hot dogs, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as wine, beer and soda.

Airports will also be busy, especially through July 6th.

Shawn Steward with Triple A Pubic Affairs says if driving, it should cost you less to get to where you’re going.

Triple A is also expecting to meet a few people whose vehicles didn’t go the distance. Tires and batteries are among the top reasons for roadside breakdowns. AAA recommends checking your vehicle’s maintenance before you go.

Tires and engine cooling are areas that should be looked over closely before beginning a long holiday road trip. Last summer, AAA responded to nearly 6,900 calls across the state.

A record 61.6 million people are expected to travel by car this holiday weekend, according to AAA.
