BLUNT, S.D. – State Highway 14 in Hughes County was reopened to traffic around 8 o’clock Sunday night (May 11, 2025) following a mid-afternoon train derailment near a grain elevator in Blunt.

Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan says several train cars derailed, blocking both the east and west bound lanes of Highway 14. As a result, traffic was rerouted for approximately 90 minutes while crews worked to clear the cars obstructing the highway.

Highway 14 was reopened by 5:15pm CT Sunday. However, Canning Road in Blunt remains blocked. Rail crews from the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad estimate they may get that section of road cleared off early this week.

The Hughes County Sheriff’s Office received assistance at the scene from the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Blunt Volunteer Fire Department.
