Tornado Strikes Near Kadoka, SD: Homes Destroyed, No Serious Injuries Reported

KADOKA, SD – June 29, 2025 – A confirmed tornado touched down last night south of Kadoka, leaving a trail of destruction that destroyed several homes and caused widespread property damage. Despite the significant devastation, authorities have reported no severe injuries or fatalities.

The storm delayed the annual Kadoka Buffalo Stampede Rodeo was delayed by 45 minutes. Photos of locals on social media show a semi rolled over and houses destroyed and other buildings severley damaged.

The Oglala Lakota Nation Highway Patrol issued a warning approximately 10pm Saturday night, confirming the tornado’s touchdown. The twister’s path was described as extending from the Whiteriver bridge and heading southeast for an estimated three to four miles.

First responders and local families are now on the scene, beginning the arduous process of cleanup and providing assistance to those affected by the storm. Emergency crews are assessing the full extent of the damage, which includes numerous residential structures flattened or heavily impacted, alongside severe general property damage across the affected area.

In the wake of the severe weather event, officials are urging the public to refrain from visiting the affected area. This is crucial to ensure clear access for emergency personnel and to allow families to manage the initial recovery efforts without hindrance. Residents are advised to respect the ongoing operations and give space to those working to restore order and assist the storm’s victims.

Earlier in the day, thunderstorms struck a portion of Butte and Meade Counties, dropping hail the size of golf balls on some places.

The Nisland and Vale areas were among those hit, where an 80 mph wind gust was also reported at Vale along with 2.50 inch hail.

There are reports of damaged campers and vehicles and broken windows in Vale and the Nisland area.

Overnight, the Black Hills area saw heavy rain from thunderstorms. Sturgis and Spearfish have reported nearly an inch of rain in some places.

On the far eastern side of the state, tornadoes resulted in damage and minor injuries in the Gary and Clear Lake areas near the Minnesota border.
