RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City area fire crews battled two structure fires in bitter cold temperatures Monday. One fire damaged a garage while another occurred in a chimney in Scenic. The garage fire was reported in the 900 block of Virginia Lane. Fire crews kept the blaze primarily to the attached garage, although the adjoining structure suffered some smoke damage. The fire appears to be accidental in nature. Fire crews in Scenic kept the chimney fire confined to the chimney and no injuries were reported in either fire.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A South Dakota woman is going to prison for 40 years for a multi-state sexual exploitation of minors. According to authorities, 26-year-old Emily Yeary from Summerset was charged with multiple sex crimes with minors from Mississippi, Kentucky, Florida and Missouri which Yeary pleaded guilty to last November. One of the victims was a missing 14-year-old girl from Mississippi who Yeary was caught with in her car and went to jail. Just days later after making bond, she contacted that same minor a second time and took that girl from her home to Kansas.

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota legislators are advancing a bill requiring lab-grown meat to be labeled. House Bill 1022 aims to prohibit misbranding of any cell-cultured protein product. The House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee discussed the proposed bill Tuesday and were met with more supporters than opponents. Proponents said the bill is needed for clear labeling of cell-cultured or lab-grown meat in the state.

LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry claimed a monumental victory Wednesday as Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. tabloids made an unprecedented apology for intruding in his life over decades and agreed to pay substantial damages to settle his privacy invasion lawsuit. Harry’s lawyer David Sherborne read a statement in court Wednesday saying News Group offers a “full and unequivocal apology” for years of unlawful intrusion. It was the first time News Group Newspapers has acknowledged wrongdoing at The Sun, a paper once known for featuring topless women on Page 3. The statement even went beyond the scope of the lawsuit to acknowledge intruding on the life of his mother, the late Princess Diana.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Parched Southern California could get some badly needed rain this weekend to dampen the prospects of another round of deadly wildfires. But even a small amount of precipitation could create new challenges like toxic ash runoff. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has ordered crews to begin preparations to shore up hillsides and install barriers to protect scorched neighborhoods from runoff ahead of the potential weekend rain. Meanwhile, red flag warnings for critical fire danger have been extended through Thursday. Small fires erupted in San Diego County, with some evacuations ordered.

NEW YORK (AP) — Scientists have detected cosmic waves that sound like chirping birds in an unexpected place. These bursts of plasma, called chorus waves, ripple at the same frequency as human hearing. When converted to audio signals, their sharp notes mimic bird calls. Now researchers have sensed the chirping waves farther away: over 62,000 miles from Earth. The research was published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The chorus was detected in a region where Earth’s magnetic field is stretched out, which scientists didn’t expect. That raises new questions about how these chirping waves form.
