The latest leak in the Keystone oil pipeline continues its troubled history
BISMARCK, N.D. — The latest leak in the 2,700-mile-long Keystone oil pipeline, which occurred Tuesday in North Dakota, marks the 23rd spill since the pipeline’s construction in 2010. The pipeline, which carries tar sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, through the Dakotas and Nebraska, has had numerous spills, with four in North Dakota alone. In total, over 1 million gallons of crude oil have been spilled, including the largest onshore spill in nine years in 2022 in Kansas. The Pipeline Safety Trust cites construction issues and design flaws as contributing factors to the leaks, with a 2021 report by the Government Accountability Office highlighting preventable construction problems. The Keystone pipeline, built by TC Energy, is now operated by South Bow as of 2024. The pipeline’s ongoing issues have drawn criticism, including protests against the proposed Keystone XL expansion, which was ultimately abandoned in 2021.

Market volatility is expected to continue as investors remain uncertain about the future of the tariffs and the potential impact on the economy.
