RCPE Nears Completion of Major Rail Upgrade Between Fort Pierre and Rapid City
RAPID CITY, S.D. โ Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad (RCPE) is nearing completion of a multi-year, public-private project that has upgraded RCPE main line from Fort Pierre to Rapid City. As a result of the $84 million investment supported by a U.S. Department of Transportation grant as well as funding from both the State of South Dakota and RCPE, RCPE will be moving ahead with a long-planned speed increase of trains on this corridor. Among improvements made during the upgrade project, 88 miles of rail have been replaced with continuously welded rail, while more than 80,000 new cross-ties have been installed.
Pennington County Departments Complete Move to New Building
RAPID CITY, S.D. โ Pennington County announces that all administrative departments have officially completed their move to the new Pennington County Administration Building, located at 900 Concourse Drive. As of today, all offices are open and fully operational at the new location, including the Auditorโs Office, Treasurer, Commission, Equalization, Planning and Zoning and Register of Deeds. All offices at the 900 Concourse Drive location operate Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Rapid City Fire Department to Dedicate Expanded Station 1
RAPID CITY, S.D. โ The Rapid City Fire Department is celebrating the completion of the newly expanded Fire Station 1 with a special dedication ceremony and open house. The dedication ceremony will be held on Friday, Nov. 14 at 10:00 a.m. at 10 Main Street. It will feature a hose uncoupling ceremony and remarks from Fire Chief Jason Culberson and Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun. Construction on the Station 1 expansion began in February 2023. The updated facility has grown from 19,000 square feet to 41,000 square feet, providing much-needed space.

RAPID CITY, S.D. โ The Rapid City Golden Corral is once again saying thank you to those who served. For the 25th year, the restaurant will offer free meals to veterans on this Veterans Day. Itโs the only Golden Corral location in South Dakota that continues this annual tradition. Organizers say itโs more than just a meal โ itโs a chance to honor service members and build community. Members of the Rapid City Disabled American Veterans chapter say the event always means a lot. The free meals will be available to all veterans and active-duty military on Veterans Day.
Senate nears passage of bill to reopen government, House to vote next
WASHINGTON (AP) โ The Senate has began its final votes on legislation to reopen the government, bringing the longest shutdown in history closer to an end after a small group of Democrats struck a deal with Republicans. The shutdown could last a few more days as members of the House, which has been on recess since mid-September, return to Washington to vote on the legislation. President Donald Trump has signaled support for the bill, saying Monday that โweโre going to be opening up our country very quickly.โ Senators began debate on the bill just past nightfall.

Airlines canceled more than 2,200 flights Monday and over 1,000 for Tuesday as unpaid air traffic controllers called out, citing financial strain and stress. The FAA plans to increase cuts from 4% of flights to 10% by the end of the week. President Donald Trump urged controllers to return to work and proposed bonuses for those remaining on duty, while lawmakers criticized his comments. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said flight limits will stay until staffing stabilizes, and experts warned that resuming normal operations could take days even after the shutdown ends.
Trump threatens to sue BBC over edited speech that sparked resignations by news bosses
LONDON (AP) โ U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a letter to the BBC threatening legal action over the way a speech he made was edited in a documentary aired by the British broadcaster. The BBCโs top executive and its head of news both quit Sunday over accusations of bias and misleading editing. In the documentary, aired before the 2024 election, Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech was edited to omit his call for peaceful protest. Trump has threatened legal action, claiming the edits misrepresented his words. BBC chairman Samir Shah apologized for the “error of judgment” and acknowledged the edits gave the impression of inciting violence. The broadcaster, known for its impartiality, is facing criticism from various political sides.
