South Dakota Reports Zero In-State Abortions in 2024, but National Estimates Tell a Different Story

UNDATED – South Dakota recorded no legal abortions within its borders in 2024, according to the state Department of Health, marking the second full year under the state’s near-total abortion ban. Governor Kristi Noem declared it “Freedom for Life Year,” celebrating the milestone. However, national research from the Charlotte Lozier Institute and the #WeCount project estimates that about 810 South Dakota residents still ended pregnancies—most by traveling to Minnesota or Colorado or receiving abortion pills by mail. The state’s official data only reflects procedures performed by licensed in-state providers, excluding out-of-state care and mail-order abortions. Critics argue that the numbers highlight the gap between policy and reality in a post-Roe South Dakota, while supporters of the ban continue to question the accuracy of outside estimates.

Rapid City Area Schools Seek Public Input on Facility Needs Referendum

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Area Schools say they are seeking input on whether or not the public would support a referendum to address long-standing facility needs. This comes after a public vote in 2020 to deny a bond referendum aimed at funding facility upgrades. RCAS says after engagement with the community since then, it has put together a new plan they hope would have greater community support. RCAS says it addresses their most urgent facility issues, including HVAC and security concerns, while coming in at a significantly lower cost than the previous proposal. The district is hoping it will align with what the community is willing to support.

While prices remain flat compared to last month, they are nearly 27 cents lower than this time last year. The cheapest gas in the state was reported at $2.48 per gallon, while the highest reached $3.61. Nationally, the average gas price rose slightly to $3.10 per gallon, with diesel averaging $3.709. Israeli fire kills dozens in Gaza, officials say, as aid delivery remains chaotic after new measures

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Local health officials in Gaza say that at least 78 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes or gunfire across the territory. The number includes a pregnant woman and her baby, who was delivered after her death but also died. The strikes occurred on Monday, even as Israel moved to ease restrictions on aid entry. Israel announced a pause in operations for 10 hours a day to allow aid delivery, but aid agencies say this is insufficient. The United Nations reports that aid trucks are being unloaded by crowds before reaching their destinations. Israel continues military operations alongside these humanitarian measures.

Trump says he’s shortening the 50-day deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump says he intends to shorten the 50-day deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a deal that ends the three-year war in Ukraine. His announcement Monday came as the Ukrainian air force said Russia fired another overnight barrage at Ukraine. Trump said two weeks ago he would implement “severe tariffs” on Russia unless a peace deal is reached by early September. Trump said he would give Putin 10 to 12 days from Monday instead. That means he wants peace efforts to make progress by Aug. 7-9. The plan includes possible sanctions and secondary tariffs targeting Russia’s trading partners.
