Meade County Sheriff’s Office Reports Increased Activity During Sturgis Rally
STURGIS, S.D. — The Meade County Sheriff’s Office released their final Rally statistics for the 85th annual event Monday. Sheriff Pat West says deputies handled 1,523 calls for service this year, up from last year’s 1,203. There were 639 traffic stops, 47 D.U.I. arrests, 22 drug arrests, 8 simple assaults, and 11 injury crashes involving county deputies. D.U.I.’s, traffic stops, and injury crashes were all up over last year. West says in total, 385 individuals were introduced to the Meade County legal system this year.
Five Arrested Following Alcohol Theft on E. Saint Patrick Street
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City police say five people were arrested following the theft of alcohol from an E. Saint Patrick Street business. Police say two individuals entered the establishment Friday afternoon and stole two bottles of liquor. The male and female fled the scene in a passenger vehicle that was located a short time later on E. Highway 44. Police stopped the vehicle and detained five individuals inside, including the two individuals who stole from the liquor store. The five were identified as 31-year-old Lewis Newholy of Box Elder, 36-year-old Tad Clark of Black Hawk, and 38-year-old Jessie Dreamer, 37-year-old Christine Bordeaux, and 22-year-old Daniel Whiteeyes, all of Rapid City.
Rapid City Police Arrest Teen for Window Break and Eluding Charges
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Police arrested an 18-year-old male Saturday after allegedly breaking the window at an E. Saint Patrick Street business. Police were dispatched to the 700 block of E. Saint Patrick for a window break alarm. Upon arrival, they noticed a black passenger vehicle on scene. Police chased the vehicle until it became disabled after crashing into a large rock at the intersection of E. Saint Patrick and Cherry Avenue. Robert Bluebird was arrested on several charges, including felony vandalism, motor vehicle theft, and eluding. He was taken to the Pennington County Jail.
Rapid City Council to Discuss Proposed 2026 Budget in Special Session
RAPID CITY, S.D. — After a week of budget reviews with City department directors, the Rapid City Council has scheduled a special session for discussion and first reading of the proposed 2026 City budget. The special City Council budget meeting is scheduled for next Monday, August 18 at 5 p.m. in Council Chambers of City Hall. The meeting will precede the regularly-scheduled City Council meeting scheduled to convene at 6:30 p.m. the same evening. Both meetings are open to the public.
Rapid City Issues 286 Building Permits in July, Record Valuation Total
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The City issued 286 building permits in July with a combined valuation of more than $65.1 million. The valuation total was the second-highest valuation total ever recorded for Rapid City in the month of July. The 286 permits issued were the most permits issued in the month of July since 2021. For the year, the City has issued 1,439 building permits for a combined total valuation of more than $226.6 million. The valuation total through the first seven months compares to $185.1 million in combined building permit valuation issued during the January through July period of 2024.
Rapid City Hosts ‘Goodbye Summer, End of Summer Bash’ at Outdoor Pools
RAPID CITY, S.D. — With school starting next week, City Recreation officials are hosting ‘Goodbye Summer, End of Summer Bash’ events at two of the three outdoor city pools this Saturday. The Horace Mann and Parkview pools will close for the season at the end of the day Saturday. The End of Summer Bash events include free open swim with a donation of items to the Cornerstone Mission. The final day of operations for the summer at the Jimmy Hilton pool at Sioux Park is Saturday, August 30.
Explosion at US Steel plant in Pennsylvania leaves 2 dead, 10 injured
CLAIRTON, Pa. (AP) — An explosion at a U.S. Steel plant that shook the ground near Pittsburgh left two dead and sent at least 10 to hospitals. An Allegheny County spokesperson says an explosion followed by several smaller blasts happened Monday morning at the Clairton Coke Works. The plant is a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and is considered the largest coking operation in North America. The explosion sent black smoke spiraling into the midday sky in the Mon Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel. Officials said a rescue operation was ongoing Monday.
Israeli strikes kill journalists and aid-seekers as Australia backs Palestinian statehood
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Local health officials in Gaza say Israeli forces have killed at least 55 people overnight, including a well-known journalist who Israel said was a militant and people who witnesses say were seeking humanitarian aid. The Al Jazeera correspondent and others were killed by an Israeli airstrike as they sheltered outside a Gaza City hospital. Al Jazeera has denied Israeli allegations that Anas al-Sharif was a militant. Hospital officials and witnesses say 12 of those killed by Israeli gunfire were trying to reach an aid distribution site. Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced plans to recognize Palestinian statehood, joining France, Britain and Canada.
Trump suggests he’ll know if Putin wants a peace deal with Ukraine soon into their meeting
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump says he expects to know quickly if a deal can be made with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to halt the war in Ukraine. Trump plans to meet Putin on Friday in Alaska. He suggested on Monday that he could know how serious Putin is within two minutes. He also refused to say if the meeting should involve Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and appeared dismissive of Zelenskyy’s role. European allies want Ukraine involved to prevent a deal favoring Moscow. Germany plans a separate, virtual meeting with Trump, Zelenskyy and other leaders to prepare for peace negotiations.
Paramount will become the new home to all UFC events in the US under 7-year deal with TKO Group
NEW YORK (AP) — Paramount will become the new home to Ultimate Fighting Championship events across the U.S. next year, through a seven-year agreement announced with TKO Group on Monday. Under the deal, Paramount will exclusively distribute the UFC’s full lineup of its 13 marquee numbered events and 30 “Fight Nights” on its streaming platform Paramount+ — with select numbered events also set to simulcast on CBS — starting in 2026. It’s a shift away from the UFC’s existing pay-per-view model, which Paramount and TKO say will allow the mixed martial arts programming reach more consumers nationwide. UFC events currently air on ESPN — which has offered tiered pricing for fans to view content across the sports network’s TV offerings and streaming platform ESPN+ since 2019.
