Rapid City Seeks Volunteers for America 250th Celebration Committees

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City’s America 250 Steering Committee is seeking citizens to serve on several citizen committees for the community’s observance of America’s 250th anniversary. Numerous plans are underway to organize several events next year to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, with a focus on activities from July 1-5. Activities include a community parade, downtown festival, arts and culture celebrations, contests and competitions, fireworks and drone shows. Interested citizens are advised to complete an online Citizen Interest Application or send a letter of interest to the Rapid City Mayor’s Office at 300 Sixth Street. Deadline to apply is Monday, October 27.


High School Students Invited to Join Rapid City Sustainability Committee

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City’s Sustainability Committee is accepting applications for two committee positions available for high school students. The students will serve one-year terms as voting members and ambassadors to the citizen committee. Applicants must be a high school student in Rapid City. Application deadline is November 7.


Protestors Rally in Rapid City as Part of Nationwide No Kings 2 Demonstrations

RAPID CITY, S.D. — On Saturday, millions nationwide gathered in more than 2,500 cities for the No Kings 2 peaceful protests. In Rapid City, hundreds of protestors gathered on Omaha Street, in front of the Rapid City Hall, sharing their perspectives opposing the Trump administration. Protests were also held in Spearfish and Sturgis. Organizers say the grassroots driven rallies are meant as a celebration of free speech and an opportunity to push back against recent moves by the Trump administration.


Two South Dakota Lottery Players Win Big in Weekend Drawings

PIERRE, S.D. — A pair of South Dakota Lottery players are big winners after Friday’s drawings. Friday’s Lucky for Life drawing resulted in a second prize winner. Lucky for Life’s second prize gives the winning player the option of $25,000 a year for life or a one-time payment of $390,000. The winning ticket was purchased at Boyd’s Drug Mart in Rapid City, and the winning numbers were 7, 24, 34, 45 and 47 with a Lucky Ball of 11. A $50,000 mega millions ticket was also sold over the weekend in Aberdeen.


Ukrainian drones strike major Russian gas plant as Trump says Kyiv may have to trade land for peace

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian drones have struck a major gas processing plant in southern Russia, causing a fire. The Orenburg plant, operated by Gazprom, is one of the world’s largest facilities of its kind. The regional governor says the attack damaged a workshop but caused no casualties. Ukraine’s military claims a large-scale fire erupted at the plant. Kyiv has increased attacks on Russian energy facilities in recent months. Elsewhere, U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Kyiv may have to give up territory in exchange for an end to Moscow’s aggression, in the latest of apparent reversals on how to pursue peace.


Thieves steal crown jewels in 4 minutes from Louvre Museum

PARIS (AP) — Thieves have pulled off a daring heist at the Louvre, stealing priceless Napoleonic jewels. On Sunday, they used a basket lift to access the museum, smashed display cases, and fled with the treasures. The theft happened in the Galerie d’Apollon, where the French Crown Jewels are displayed. Officials say the operation took only four minutes and was carried out by professionals. The Louvre has faced criticism for understaffing and security issues. The museum closed for the rest of Sunday as investigators began their search for clues. The heist has sparked political debate in France.


Renewed fighting tests Gaza ceasefire and Israel briefly halts aid

JERUSALEM (AP) — Gaza’s fragile ceasefire is facing its first major test. An Israeli security official said the transfer of humanitarian aid into the territory was halted Sunday after Hamas militants killed two soldiers, but later said it would resume Monday. Israeli forces launched a wave of strikes across Gaza but later said they resumed enforcing the ceasefire. Health officials at least 36 Palestinians were killed. A little over a week has passed since the start of the U.S.-proposed truce aimed at ending two years of war. A senior Egyptian official involved in ceasefire negotiations said “round-the-clock” contacts were underway to de-escalate the situation.


Horror sequel ‘Black Phone 2’ dials up a No. 1 opening

Universal Pictures says Sunday that “Black Phone 2” has topped the North American box office with an estimated $26.5 million in ticket sales. The film starring Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames opened in 3,411 theaters and received positive reviews four years after the original became a sleeper success. It’s a much needed hit for Blumhouse after a string of disappointments this year including “M3GAN 2.0.” The overall box office is up about 4% compared to last year, despite a slow October. “Black Phone 2” also earned $15.5 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $42 million against a $30 million budget.
