Food Pantries See Surge as SNAP Payments Halted Amid Government Shutdown

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Food pantries and community organizations across the country saw long lines Saturday after the suspension of federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments due to the ongoing government shutdown. In New York’s Bronx borough, hundreds lined up before dawn for free groceries, while similar surges were reported in Georgia, Kentucky, and Connecticut. The Department of Agriculture had planned to halt SNAP payments until federal judges ordered the administration to continue them, though uncertainty remains over when funds will be restored. The program supports about 42 million Americans. Volunteers and recipients alike said the lapse has deepened food insecurity ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

US and China agree to set up direct military communication channels, Hegseth says

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says Washington and Beijing will establish military-to-military communications channels, adding that bilateral ties between the countries have “never been better.” His remarks posted on X early Sunday came hours after he urged Southeast Asian nations to stand firm and strengthen their maritime forces to counter China’s increasingly “destabilizing” actions in the South China Sea. Hegseth said he spoke to President Donald Trump and that they agreed “the relationship between the U.S. and China has never been better.” Trump’s meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea earlier this week “set the tone for everlasting peace and success for the U.S. and China,” added Hegseth, who left Malaysia on Sunday for Hanoi.

U.S. Military Conducts Another Strike on Alleged Drug Smugglers in Caribbean

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The U.S. military carried out another airstrike on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea suspected of drug trafficking, killing three people, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Saturday. He said the vessel was operated by a U.S.-designated terrorist organization but did not specify which group. The strike marks at least the 15th such operation since early September, part of the Trump administration’s effort to curb narcotics smuggling into the United States. President Trump has described the campaign as an armed conflict against drug cartels. Lawmakers have requested more information about the legal basis for the strikes and details about targeted groups, but the administration has not yet provided full documentation.
