Airport Funding Bill Advances with Minimal Funding as Session Nears End

The bill requires labeling for PFAS – substances known as “forever chemicals.” From helmets to coats to footwear – the cancer-causing agent PFAS can be found head to toe in what firefighters wear every time they gear up for fire and rescue activities. Currently – South Dakota law does not require a PFAS label notifying the risk of cancer on the PPEs firefighters wear.

Bill to Protect Wounded Knee Massacre Site Advances in Congress

WASHINGTON — A Congressional committee is advancing a bill protecting the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre. The bill is backed by South Dakota U.S. Sens. Mike Rounds and John Thune. It would place 40 acres of land at the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre into restricted status. Rounds says this makes certain the land is held by both the Oglala Sioux and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes for generations to come. A previous version of the bill also advanced past committee but ended up blocked on the Senate floor in November of 2024.

Congress Moves to Avert Shutdown as Trump Pushes Federal Cuts

WASHINGTON — The Republican-led U.S. Congress is on track to pass a key piece of legislation this week to keep the government funded and avoid a partial shutdown, which is set to begin on Saturday. This comes amid adjustments in Washington as President Donald Trump accelerates efforts to streamline federal agencies. Despite past divisions, hardline members of the narrow 218-214 House Republican majority, who have previously resisted Speaker Mike Johnson’s plans, are now signaling support for the bill. If approved, the measure will maintain current funding levels through September 30, the end of the fiscal year. While Senate Democrats are expected to back the bill, they may exercise their filibuster power to delay the process. Looking ahead, the looming debt ceiling deadline presents a significant economic risk that could complicate future legislative efforts.

Mark Carney Wins Liberal Leadership, Promises Stronger Canada-U.S. Ties

OTTAWA — Former central banker Mark Carney triumphed in a decisive victory on Sunday, securing the leadership of Canada’s Liberal Party and setting his sights on becoming the country’s next prime minister. Carney’s leadership signals a fresh direction for Canada as he aims to bolster the nation’s position on the global stage. Liberal Party members rallied behind Carney, viewing him as the ideal candidate to navigate the challenges posed by U.S. President Donald Trump, including potential tariffs and annexation threats, all while safeguarding Canada’s economic interests. Carney is expected to call for a general election soon, with a focus on stability and growth. His rise to power marks a historic shift, as he will be the first Canadian prime minister without prior electoral experience. Additionally, Carney’s leadership represents a departure from some of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s signature policies.

Zelenskiy Meets Saudi Crown Prince Amid Shifting U.S. Support for Ukraine

KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as Kyiv navigates a critical phase in its efforts to end the war with Russia. The meeting comes ahead of high-stakes discussions between Ukrainian and U.S. officials on Tuesday, following a shift in Washington’s approach. U.S. envoys are expected to push for a framework for peace, including an initial ceasefire, as diplomatic efforts intensify.
