Two Critically Injured in Interstate 90 Crash Near Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. Two individuals sustained life-threatening injuries Sunday in a single-vehicle crash near mile marker 90 on Interstate 90, with the vehicle coming to rest on 173rd Avenue below the overpass. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. According to officials, the eastbound vehicle lost control on I-90 before leaving the roadway and landing on 173rd Avenue. Both the driver and passenger suffered critical injuries. The passenger was transported by Life Flight to Monument Health in Rapid City. The driver was transported to Monument Health by ambulance.


Hiker Rescued After Fall at Hippie Hole Trail

RAPID CITY, S.D. Pennington County Search and Rescue rescued a hiker who had fallen on the trail down to Hippie Hole on Saturday. Authorities say just after 5:00 p.m., Rockerville VFD, Keystone Ambulance and Pennington County Search and Rescue were paged to the area where a patient was reported to have a broken ankle and was in and out of consciousness, possibly going into shock. The patient was alert when taken to the hospital. After getting the patient ready to be hauled out of the area via a stokes basket and ropes, another member of the party became unresponsive after standing up quickly. That patient was given IV fluids and assisted up the trail to the parking lot by medical personnel.


Rapid Transit Youth Ridership Reaches Five-Year High

RAPID CITY, S.D. Rapid Transit System (RTS) recorded 56,867 youth passenger trips during the recently-completed 2024-25 school year, more than 10,000 additional youth trips recorded over the previous school year and setting a five-year high for youth ridership. The August through May youth ridership numbers represent an 18 percent increase from the 2023-24 school year (46,827 youth trips), a 28 percent increase from 2022-23 (40,669), 42 percent jump from 2021-22 (33,101) and 51 percent increase from 2020-21 (27,662). RTS averaged more than 6,318 youth riders for each full month schools were in session (September through May).


Hotel Way Project Completed in Box Elder

BOX ELDER, S.D. A long-sought transportation improvement, Hotel Way, is now a reality for Box Elder, thanks to a collaborative effort. The newly completed corridor, crucial for the growing community adjacent to Ellsworth Air Force Base, was brought to fruition through the partnership of LIV Hospitality, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), and Rapid City. Hotel Way is expected to improve traffic flow and provide better access for residents and visitors.


Flume Trail Section Closed for Tree Maintenance Work

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Effective Monday, a stretch of the flume trail along the northside of Rapid Creek will be closed to public access as City Parks crews conduct maintenance work in the area. The impacted stretch of the flume trail extends from the area north of the Abourezk Law Firm at Mountain View Road and Omaha Street east to Founders Park. The entire stretch will be closed for a few weeks for crews to conduct tree maintenance work. The public is advised to use other trails in the area during this period of maintenance work.


Salt Spill Cleared Near Broken Boot Mine in Deadwood

DEADWOOD, S.D. — Deadwood Fire and Rescue assisted Deadwood Fire and Police with a spill on the highway Friday. Authorities say the call came in at 3:43 p.m. for a significant spill of salt on the highway near Broken Boot Mine. Firefighters assisted with traffic control and clean up of the salt on the roadway. Due to the amount of salt in the roadway, heavy equipment was requested from the City of Deadwood and S.D. Department of Transportation. Operators from both agencies were quick to respond and were able to get traffic restored quickly.


Second Measles Case Reported West River

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A second case of measles West River was reported on Friday as health officials issued an alert for residents who may have been in contact with the individual. The infected person visited the Sam’s Club in Rapid City on June 1 between the hours of noon and 6 p.m. and the Dakota Premier Clinic on Mt Rushmore Rd on June 2 between the hours of 11:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. The state’s first case of measles this year was reported in a Meade County individual who had traveled internationally.


Rapid City Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Meth Trafficking

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A federal judge on Friday sentenced a Rapid City man, tied to a Mexican drug cartel, to 25 years in prison. Thirty-eight-year-old Guillermo Calderon pleaded guilty in March to Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. Prosecutors say Calderon was the leader of the conspiracy that trafficked significant amounts of methamphetamine to Rapid City and Pine Ridge from Mexican cartel operatives. Authorities in Iowa arrested Calderon in January 2024, while he was allegedly driving 20 pounds of meth into South Dakota.


Protests intensify in Los Angeles after Trump deploys hundreds of National Guard troops

LOS ANGELES (AP) — National Guard troops faced off with protesters in Los Angeles as tear gas was fired at a growing crowd outside a federal complex hours after the federal troops arrived in the city on President Donald Trump’s orders. The confrontation broke out Sunday in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles as a group of demonstrators shouted insults at members of the guard lined shoulder to shoulder behind plastic riot shields. Around 300 National Guard troops had arrived early Sunday on orders from President Donald Trump following two days of clashes with immigration authorities.


Russia awaits Ukraine’s confirmation on a planned exchange of dead fighters, officials say

Russian officials say that Moscow is still awaiting confirmation from Kyiv on a planned exchange of 6,000 bodies of soldiers killed in action. Russia is accusing Ukraine of delaying the process. Russian negotiator Lt. Gen. Alexander Zorin said Sunday that Russia delivered 1,212 bodies of Ukrainian troops to a border site. Zorin said that the Russians are receiving “signals” that the transfer may be postponed until next week. The swap was agreed on during direct talks in Istanbul. But both sides have since accused each other of undermining the plan. Ukraine has denied a date was agreed upon and accused Russia of manipulating facts and submitting incorrect repatriation lists.


Warner Bros. Discovery to split into two companies, dividing cable and streaming services

NEW YORK (AP) — Warner Bros. Discovery will split into two public companies by next year, calving off cable operations from its streaming service as the number of people “cutting the cord” brings with it a sustained upheaval in the entertainment industry. Warner Bros. Discovery said Monday that Streaming & Studios will include Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max, as well as their film and television libraries. The Global Networks company will include CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Discovery, top free-to-air channels across Europe, and digital products such as the Discovery+ streaming service and Bleacher Report. Shares jumped more than 7% before the market opened.
