Beef Prices Hit Record Highs as Supply Shrinks and Demand Stays Strong
OMAHA, Neb. — Beef prices have soared to record highs this summer, with ground beef averaging $6.12 per pound in June and steak prices climbing to $11.49, according to U.S. government data. Experts say the surge is tied to a decades-long decline in the U.S. cattle herd, which has shrunk to its lowest level since 1951. Drought, high production costs, and emerging threats like parasites in Mexico and potential tariffs are further tightening supply. With beef still in high demand, analysts warn that consumers shouldn’t expect relief anytime soon.
Trump Administration Releases FBI Surveillance Files on Martin Luther King Jr.
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Monday released over 240,000 pages of previously sealed FBI surveillance files on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., fulfilling a long-promised commitment to declassify historic government records. The document release, supported by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and praised by King’s niece Alveda King, offers researchers a vast trove of material detailing the FBI’s scrutiny of King’s civil rights leadership and anti-war activism. While King’s children, Martin III and Bernice, expressed concern over the timing and personal impact of the disclosure, they acknowledged the importance of viewing the documents within their historical context and called for empathy and respect. The release marks another chapter in America’s effort to reckon with its civil rights past and provides new insight into King’s life, his assassination, and the government’s controversial surveillance tactics.
