RCPD Steps Up Patrols Amid Rise in Gunshot Calls, Urges Gun Owners to Secure Firearms

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Police Department has announced that they will be increasing patrols in response to a rise in gunshot calls across the city. Officers will focus on neighborhoods where these incidents are happening, aiming to quickly respond, investigate, and catch those responsible for this dangerous behavior. The RCPD is also asking for help from the community to prevent these incidents. One common way offenders get firearms is by stealing them from vehicles. Police are urging gun owners not to leave firearms in unattended cars.

South Dakota Drivers Urged to Renew Vehicle Registrations Early Ahead of System Update

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota officials are asking drivers who need to renew their registration by March to get it done early. South Dakota is implementing a new motor vehicle software beginning February 17th. However, vehicle registration renewals will be offline for the ten days prior. The 605Drive system is going to replace mySDCars, modernizing the state’s title, vehicle registration, and dealer system. Drivers within the February or March window to renew registration include last names that begin with C, D, E, F, G and J. Those people are encouraged to renew as soon as possible to avoid a longer waiting time. Registrations can be renewed 90 days before the current registration’s expiration date.

A major winter blast of snow, ice, wind and plunging temperatures in the U.S. stirred dangerous travel conditions from central and southern states all the way to the East Coast early Monday, prompting schools and government offices in several states to close. Over the weekend, at least 600 motorists were stranded in Missouri, authorities said. Hundreds of car accidents were reported in Virginia, Indiana, Kansas and Kentucky.

Harris will oversee certification of her defeat to Trump four years after he sparked Capitol attack

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris will preside over the certification of her defeat to Donald Trump. In doing so Monday, she will join a short list of other vice presidents who have overseen the ceremonial confirmation of their own losses. Richard Nixon did it after losing to John F. Kennedy in 1960. Al Gore followed suit when the U.S. Supreme Court tipped the 2000 election to George W. Bush.

New Orleans attack

Authorities have disclosed disturbing details about the timeline leading up to the New Year’s terror attack in New Orleans, which may have been years in the making. The 42-year-old suspect reportedly visited the city twice in the months prior and used Meta Glasses to record Bourbon Street as part of his planning, according to FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Lyonel Myrthil on Sunday. The attack, carried out with a heavy-duty truck, left 14 dead and at least 35 injured, sparking concerns about the security measures in the French Quarter and how the vehicle accessed one of the busiest pedestrian areas in the country. President Joe Biden is set to visit New Orleans shortly to attend a vigil and deliver remarks in honor of the victims.

Ukraine

NEW YORK (AP) — Say hello to the latest dog in the American Kennel Club’s lineup of recognized breeds. The Danish-Swedish farmdog joined the pack Thursday. The designation makes the breed eligible to compete for many best in show trophies. It’s also likely to bring more widespread interest in the small, sprightly dogs, and that possibility both gladdens and concerns their biggest fans. Carey Segebart is one of the people who worked to get Danish-Swedish farmdogs recognized by the AKC. She says it’s exciting, but farmdog folks don’t want the breed’s popularity grow too quickly.
