Police Investigate Casino Theft and Signal Drive Shooting
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Police in Rapid City are investigating a theft that happened at a casino on W. Main Street. Police say a suspect entered a locked office on Oct. 31, and stole money from a safe at the 777 Casino. The crime was reported around 10 p.m. and likely happened between 9 and 10 p.m. that day. Police say they are still searching for the suspect and if anyone has information on the case, they’re encouraged to contact police. At around 1:35 a.m. on November 6th, police were dispatched to the 100 block of E. Signal Drive for multiple reports of gunshots heard in the area. On arrival, police spoke to witnesses who said they observed a male subject exit a residence in the 100 block of E. Signal Drive with a rifle and fire several shots before going back inside. Police recovered several shell casings from the location, but did not locate any damage caused by the gunfire. At the time of this release, no property damage or injuries caused by the gunfire have been reported to police. Through the course of the investigation into the shooting, police identified 41-year-old Brian Knutson of Rapid City as the suspect responsible for firing the rifle. Knutson was located and placed under arrest for Aggravated Assault, Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, and Possession of a Controlled Substance prior to being transported to the Pennington County Jail. In conjunction with the investigation into the shooting, a search warrant was executed on two residences in the 100 block of E. Signal Drive with the assistance of the Rapid City/Pennington County Special Response Team. Local law enforcement has recovered several firearms, illegal drugs, and related paraphernalia as a result of the search warrant. At the conclusion of the search warrant, 28-year-old Leslie Bartlett of Rapid City has also been placed under arrest for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Maintaining a Place Where Drugs are Kept, Sold, Or Used. The investigation into the incident remains open and ongoing.
South Dakota to Be Featured in Rose Parade Float
RAPID CITY, S.D. — A float featuring South Dakota will be part of a New Year’s Day parade on Jan. 1. Travel South Dakota, the state’s tourism department, will have a Rose Parade float called “Carved in Stone: A Legacy of Teamwork.” The entry’s focus is the faces of Mount Rushmore, but it will also feature the Dignity statue, thundering bison and other elements of the state’s cultural landscape, according to a department news release. The float will have almost 40,000 floral elements. Corn, wheat, and sunflowers will be used. Textured rust cornsilk will be used for the bison’s coat.
Rapid City Sees Near-Record October for Building Permits
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The City of Rapid City issued 223 building permits in October with a combined valuation total of more than $69.8 million, the second-highest October on record in Rapid City for building permit valuation. With two months remaining in the year, the City has issued 2,078 building permits with a valuation total of $357.4 million. The totals compare to 2,281 permits issued for the first 10 months of 2024 with a combined valuation total of $342.5 million. This year’s $357.4 million valuation total is already the fifth-highest annual valuation total in the City’s history, with two months left in the year.
Yard Waste Collection Ending for the Season in Rapid City
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Curbside yard waste collection in Rapid City will end for the season on Friday, November 28 and the last day the remote yard waste disposal sites at Fitzgerald Stadium and West Boulevard North will be open for disposal is Sunday, November 30. After November 30, all yard waste must be taken to the Rapid City Landfill. The collection crew will begin removing the yard waste containers from the remote sites on Monday morning, December 1. Curbside yard waste collection services and the remote yard waste containers are scheduled to return in the spring.
Federal judge orders Trump administration to fully fund SNAP benefits in November
A federal judge in Rhode Island has ordered the Trump administration to find the money to fully fund SNAP benefits for November. The ruling Thursday was in response to a challenge from cities and nonprofits complaining that the administration was only offering to cover 65% of the maximum benefit. The Trump administration said last month that it would not pay benefits at all for November because of the federal shutdown. Last week, two judges ordered the government to pay at least partial benefits using an emergency fund. It initially said it would cover half, but it now says it will cover 65%.
Sudanese paramilitary group agrees to humanitarian truce proposed by US-led mediators
CAIRO (AP) — The Rapid Support Force, a paramilitary group that has been at war with the Sudanese military for over two years, said it has agreed to a humanitarian truce that was proposed by a U.S.-led mediator group, also known as the Quad. The agreement on Thursday to the proposal comes over a week after the group seized el-Fasher city that has been under siege for over 18 months. It was also the last Sudanese military stronghold in the Sudan’s western Darfur region. Sudan’s military told The Associated Press that the army will only agree to a truce which includes withdrawing from civilian areas and giving up weapons.
