Rapid City Prepares for Thanksgiving Holiday Closures, Schedule Changes

RAPID CITY, S.D. – City offices in Rapid City, the gateway to the Black Hills of South Dakota, will close Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27 and 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, prompting several adjustments to public services and operations.

The City Hall facility will be closed both days. Residents should also note changes impacting solid waste, public transit, and various city-operated facilities during Thanksgiving week.

Key service adjustments are as follows:

  • Solid Waste: The Rapid City Landfill will be closed Thanksgiving Day and will reopen Friday and Saturday for normal hours. Residential trash collection will be altered. Monday and Friday collections remain on schedule. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday collections will take place one day earlier:
    • Tuesday’s collection should be set out on Monday.
    • Wednesday’s collection should be set out on Tuesday.
    • Thursday’s collection should be set out on Wednesday.
  • Rapid Transit: Bus services will be suspended Thursday and Friday and will resume a regular schedule Saturday, Nov. 29.
  • Rapid City Public Library: The library will close early at 5 p.m. Wednesday and remain closed Thursday and Friday for the holiday. Normal hours will resume Saturday.
  • The Monument: The events center will be closed Thanksgiving Day. Ticket offices and administrative offices will open at 12 p.m. Friday to support scheduled events.
  • Roosevelt Ice Arena: The facility will be closed Thanksgiving Day. Public skate times during the holiday week are Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 1:30-3:30 p.m., and Saturday from 1:30-3:15 p.m. The Badlands Sabres will host the Yellowstone Quake Friday and Saturday nights with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m. No public skate is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 30.
  • Rapid City Regional Airport: The Airport will be operational Thanksgiving Day, though administrative offices will be closed Thursday and Friday. Travelers are encouraged to check with their respective airlines for travel updates.
  • Rapid City Police and Fire Departments: RCPD and RCFD will operate regular shifts Thanksgiving Day. Administrative offices for both departments will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Holiday week activities in Rapid City include the 17th annual Wilson Park Tree Lighting event on Mount Rushmore Road next Tuesday from 5:15-6 p.m., with Mayor Jason Salamun lighting the holiday tree.

The community celebration continues Saturday, Nov. 29, in downtown Rapid City. Main Street Square’s Holiday Celebration and Winter Market runs from noon to 8 p.m., featuring events starting at noon and culminating with Mayor Salamun lighting the Christmas tree around 5 p.m. The annual Festival of Lights parade is scheduled for 6 p.m. downtown. Mayor Salamun has proclaimed Saturday, Nov. 29, as Small Business Saturday and Shop Local Day in Rapid City.
