Teen fatally shot in Rapid City Thursday night

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a teenager.

Police say they responded to 301 N. 5th Street around 10:00 p.m. on June 6. Upon arrival, they discovered 18-year-old Wanbli Taylor Janis suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers administered emergency first aid until a medical unit arrived, which then transported Janis to the hospital. Despite efforts, Janis was pronounced deceased.

Witnesses reported that the shooting occurred following an interaction between two groups of individuals. After the incident, multiple groups were observed fleeing the area.

The Rapid City Police Department (RCPD) has been actively investigating the case throughout the evening and will continue to canvas the area today (Friday).

Based on information gathered during the investigation, authorities do not believe the shooting was a random act, and there is no perceived threat to public safety at this time.
