John Oliver’s Erie Moon Mammoths debut in front of a record crowd
John Oliver brought his quirky humor to minor league baseball with the debut of the Erie Moon Mammoths. The team, rebranded by Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight,” played its first game on Saturday night in front of a record crowd of 7,070. The idea began in May when Oliver invited teams to pitch why they deserved a rebrand. The Erie SeaWolves won and after weeks of planning, the Moon Mammoths, complete with a space-themed woolly mammoth mascot, were unveiled. Fans have embraced the eccentric team, with record merchandise sales and packed games. Oliver even threw the first pitch and joined the fun as a batboy.
