Suspect Sought After Gunfire Damages Rapid City Apartment

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Police are searching for a 22-year-old man in connection with a reckless discharge of a firearm that resulted in two bullet holes in a second-floor apartment in Rapid City early Monday.

Officers with the Rapid City Police Department were dispatched to 102 Waterloo St, across from the Roosevelt Swim Center, at about 4:10 a.m. for a disturbance report. They made contact with residents on the second floor who directed them to damage from gunfire in their floor.

The investigation led officers to the first-floor apartment directly beneath, where they determined the shots originated from a bedroom. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Upon entering the first-floor bedroom, police observed a handgun on the floor. Neighbors reported seeing multiple people exit the bedroom window shortly after the incident.

Police obtained a search warrant for the bedroom, where they recovered 11 firearms in total, including at least one handgun that was reported stolen. A significant amount of marijuana, THC wax and THC edibles were also recovered, in addition to a large quantity of ammunition.

Police have identified James Spencer, 22, of Rapid City as the primary suspect in the ongoing investigation. The department is asking anyone with information about Spencer’s whereabouts to contact police immediately at 605-394-4131.
