STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Police say they were involved in two high speed pursuits over the past two nights.
The latest happened overnight Saturday into Sunday as Sturgis Police tried to stop a black Dodge pick up for speeding and equipment violations.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater says the vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit ensued going through town hitting residential streets before heading up over sly Hill, at a high rate of speed. He says the vehicle continued northbound until he lost control and went into the ditch at the intersection of Bighorn and bear butte road.
Vandewater reports the subject then ran from officers and after a short foot pursuit, they were able to catch him and take him into custody.
The suspect, who was not identified, was arrested for DUI and multiple other traffic violations.
Assisting Sturgis Police were the South Dakota Highway Patrol and Meade County sheriffs office.
Vandewater says this was the second pursuit in two nights. On Friday night officers from the Sturgis Police Department also had a pursuit with a motorcycle driving at a high rate of speed, leaving Sturgis traveling east on Highway 34.
After a short time the motorcyclist pulled over and the driver was taken in custody for multiple charges as well.
