STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis’ newly formed Ordinance Committee met for the first time last week.

The committee consists of councilors Jim Thompson, Nick Jones, Ruth Kopp and Jesse Blakeman, as well as Bob Haivala, Steve Anders and attorney Eric Davis.

Davis told the Sturgis City Council Monday night the committee discussed the process to implement American Legal’s Ordinance structure and recommendations on updating the Sturgis City Ordinances.

Davis says the committee came to a consensus to divide their work into three phases.

Phase 1 would be to fix typos and other minor changes. Phase 2 is to make necessary changes ensuring ordinances are in-line with state and federal laws. And, Phase 3 is to address those ordinances that need updating and repealed, and identify ordinances that need to be added.

Davis says the committee is looking at completing all phases in approximately two years.
