STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council approved a motion at their meeting Monday night to have the city enter into agreement with the State of South Dakota and the FAA for an AIG (Airport Infrastructure Grant) project for the Sturgis Airport.

The project includes terminal reconstruction and Parallel Taxi-Way improvement and construction.

Sturgis Public Works Director Rick Bush told the council Terminal Renovation is estimated at $495,000 with 95% of the cost paid by the FAA, 2.5% paid by the State of South Dakota with the remaining 2.5% by the city. The cost to the city is $7,500.

Parallel taxiway construction is estimated at $5,575,000 with the FAA and State total of 97.5% and the city at 2.5% totaling $139,375 by the city.

Bush says the cost in 2025 would be approximately $7,500 for the project design. The construction is expected to begin in 2026, so the remaining city funds would be due in 2026.

Engineers say the project is priority for the Sturgis Airport due to its continued growth and growing concern of runway incursions.

Bush says 2025 funding for the city’s portion will come from the Capital Improvement budget.
