STURGIS, S.D. – After more than hour of testimony, the Sturgis Council voted to table a proposal to allow motorcycle only parking on a section of Main Street in the days leading up to the 85th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Mark Bruch with the Downtown Sturgis Foundation brought forward the plan that would allow motorcycle only parking on the North and South side of Main Street from 1st to 4th street from July 28th through July 31st.

This has been a topic of Main Street businesses in the area, and Bruch says most were in favor of the plan.

There was some concern however from Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater and Public Works Director Rick Bush, who talked about the added layer of complications.

Council members, though, didn’t want to totally abandon the idea if organizers could come up with a plan that tackles some of the concerns raised.

Sturgis Mayor Kevin Forrester:

The council unanimously voted to table the issue until its next meeting.
