SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Spearfish Fire Department says some stain-soaked rags sparked a fire Wednesday morning.
At approximately 9:02 a.m., Spearfish Fire was paged out for a fire in the attached garage of a house off Welcome Way southeast of Spearfish.
Upon arrival, fire units found that the fire had been knocked down and contained to the area of origin by the individual who initially found the fire.
Members of the Spearfish Fire Department checked the structure for extension and completed overhaul operations.
The cause of the fire was determined to be stain-soaked rags that were improperly disposed of.
Spearfish Fire stated: “Remember, when using stain or preservative oils, such as linseed oil, it is best to hang the soiled rags in a well-ventilated area to dry away from heat and ignition sources. After they are completely dry, dispose of them in a sealed container.”
