School district officials have released text messages, personnel files and student records of the shooter from the 2022 attack at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 students and two teachers. Monday’s document release follows a yearslong legal battle over public access to the material. Media organizations, including The Associated Press, had sued the district and county in 2022 for the release of their records. It is not the public’s first glimpse inside the slow law enforcement response to the shooting. Last year, city officials in Uvalde released police body camera videos from their officers and 911 calls.

In justifying a federal take over of policing in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump claims that crime in the capital city is on the rise and that homicide rates in 2023 were the highest ever seen. Neither is true, as the city’s own crime statistics show. Violent crime did spike in 2023 following the pandemic, but instances of violent crime have fallen in the intervening years. The city recently recorded a 26% drop in violent crime last year. Trump also said homicide data from decades ago isn’t available, but records from the 1980s and 1990s show the number of homicides routinely exceeded the numbers seen today.

The New York Post is launching a California tabloid newspaper and news site next year. The company announced the plan Monday. The California Post will add another title to Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. And the new paper stands to bring an assertive, irreverent and conservative-friendly fixture of the Big Apple media landscape to the Golden State. Plans for the Los Angeles-based paper call for a print edition seven days a week, plus a website, social media accounts and videos and audio pieces. The venture is being launched into a turbulent atmosphere for the news business. But the Post expects its voice, editorial lens and coverage will be a hit in California.

In a bid to kickoff a new era for DC Studios, James Gunn’s “Superman” opened with $122 million in U.S. and Canada ticket sales over the weekend. DC and Warner Bros. had a lot riding on “Superman.” The superheroes of DC have recently found mostly kryptonite in theaters. Films like “Joker: Folie à Deux,” “The Flash” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” all flopped. But “Superman” is intended as a new start. It’s the first release fully steered by Gunn and Peter Safran since they were handed the keys to DC’s superhero cinematic universe. The roughly on-target opening was the third largest of 2025. Ticket sales were relatively soft for “Superman” overseas. In 78 international markets, it grossed $95 million.

The four University of Idaho students found stabbed to death at a rental home near campus on Nov. 13, 2022, were all friends and members of the university’s Greek system. The killings of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin left many of their classmates and residents reeling with grief and fear. Autopsies showed the four were all likely asleep when they were attacked. Some had defensive wounds and each was stabbed multiple times. A lawyer for one victim’s family has said that 30-year-old Bryan Kohberger has agreed to plead guilty to killing the four students as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty.

Elon Musk’s X has sued to try to stop New York from requiring reports on how social media platforms define and handle problematic posts. The company sued Tuesday, after successfully challenging a similar measure in California. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed her state’s legislation late last year. The law is poised to take effect later this year. X maintains that the measure impinges on free speech rights and on a 1996 federal law that lets internet platforms moderate posts as they see fit. New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office hasn’t immediately responded to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

Benfica overcame a two-goal deficit, getting Ángel Di María’s penalty kick in first-half stoppage time and Nicolás Otamendi’s 84th-minute goal for a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors on Monday night in a heated Club World Cup match that included three red cards, four yellows and 22 fouls. Boca Juniors played in a home-like environment with the Argentine club’s supporters making up most of the 55,574 crowd at Hard Rock Stadium against one of Portugal’s premier teams. Both teams finished a man short and one Boca player was ejected after he was substituted from the match.
