SPEARFISH, SD – The Spearfish City Council on Monday approved an amendment to the new skatepark construction agreement to address concrete surface issues, securing a three-year warranty for the facility in the Black Hills area of South Dakota.
The amendment requires the contractor, American Ramp Company (ARC), to repair existing concrete issues and extends the warranty period from the standard one year to three years, retroactive to October 1, 2025. The council also approved the project’s certificate of completion.
City Parks and Recreation Director Tyler Ehnes said City staff had been negotiating with ARC to resolve quality concerns, including cracking and spalling (concrete breakdown) on the surface of the skatepark at Spartan Park, which was substantially finished in September. ARC inspected the site and agreed to make repairs, including fixing cracks, recutting expansion joints, and addressing spalled areas, in addition to extending the warranty.
“We are pleased to close out this project,” Parks and Recreation Director Ehnes said. “We know the community is excited for a grand opening, which we will be scheduling for a future date. In the meantime, the skatepark is open for use!”
The approximately 8,800 square-foot skate park is located in the center of the former lower football field at Spartan Park. It replaces the previous skate park near Spearfish High School, which was relocated due to the construction of the school’s CTE (Career and Technical Education) Building. Planning and fundraising for the new facility, an important amenity for the Rapid City region, began in 2022, with construction commencing this spring.
