Spartans Down Scoopers in Season Finale

SPEARFISH, SD – The Spearfish Spartans took an early lead over Sturgis and never relinquished it in an 8-2 win over the Scoopers on Sunday.

Spearfish got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Walker Viessman singled, scoring two runs, Jack Scharf grounded out, scoring one run, and Tucker Olson singled, scoring one run. The Spartans led 4-0 after two innings.

The Scoopers got on the board in the top of the third inning, as Brody Royer doubled to centerfield, scoring George Hamer and Kjell Sundstrom.

Spearfish tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of Scooper mistakes to take a 7-2 lead. The Spartans added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.

Brody Royer took the loss for Sturgis. The pitcher surrendered nine hits and seven runs over four and one-third innings, striking out five and walking five. Jack Branum got the complete game win for Spearfish, surrendering six hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking two.

Royer led Sturgis at the plate with two hits in three at bats. The Scoopers totaled six hits and committed two errors in the game.

The Spartans collected 11 hits, with Tucker Olson setting the tone at the top of the lineup, leading Spearfish with three hits in three at bats.

The Scoopers wrap up their regular season with a 7-16 record and travel to Harrisburg on Friday to take on the Tigers in the first round of the Class A baseball playoffs. The Spartans complete their season with an 8-10 record and take on Sioux Falls Jefferson in round one of the postseason.
