PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota lawmakers are signing off on a plan to build a new men’s prison in Sioux Falls.
During a special session Tuesday, both the House and Senate approved the 650-million-dollar project, which will replace the state’s 144-year-old penitentiary.
The House voted 51-18 to approve the bill while the Senate voted 24-11. A two-thirds majority was needed and the bill just barely passed that level in the Senate.
Governor Rhoden signed the bill into law last night and says construction should start next year.
The new facility is expected to take about four years to complete.
