Rapid City, S.D. – A significant traffic incident involving six vehicles brought Interstate 190 to a standstill during Tuesday morning’s commute. The crash occurred at approximately 7:53 a.m. near mile marker 1, close to the Omaha Street exit in Rapid City.

According to preliminary information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, all six vehicles were traveling southbound on I-190 when they approached slow-moving and stopped traffic stemming from a construction zone ahead. The presence of a hill leading up to the congestion reportedly limited drivers’ visibility.

The chain reaction collision began when the lead vehicle attempted to avoid hitting the stopped traffic. This resulted in five other vehicles colliding with each other from behind.

The drivers involved in the incident were identified as a 20-year-old female from Rapid City (driving a 2015 Dodge Charger), a 15-year-old male from Rapid City (driving a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee), a 64-year-old from Rapid City (driving a 2023 Hyundai Tucson, with no passengers), an unknown individual from Rapid City (driving a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado), a 17-year-old female from Black Hawk (driving a 2025 Mazda CX-5), and a 29-year-old female from Box Elder (driving a 2015 Dodge Journey). Authorities confirmed that all drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crashes.

Remarkably, no major injuries were reported, and all six drivers declined medical assistance at the scene.

The six-vehicle pileup led to the closure of both southbound lanes of I-190 for approximately one hour, causing significant delays for morning commuters. Traffic flow has since been restored.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The names of the individuals involved have not been officially released at this time as the investigation is ongoing. Authorities emphasize that the information released is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation progresses.
