Shooter, victim named in deadly exchange

RAPID CITY, SD โ€” Police have released the names of both the victim and the suspect in a deadly weekend shooting in Rapid City.

Seventeen-year-old Omariraine Red Bear is charged with First-Degree Murder in connection with Saturday morningโ€™s (May17, 2025) shooting on Wood Avenue, on Rapid Cityโ€™s north side.

Red Bear is being held in the Western South Dakota Juvenile Services Center.

Heโ€™s accused of killing 33-year-old Dakota Britthouer, who died at the hospital.

Police say the two knew one another and that the shooting was not random.

โ€œRed Bearโ€™s identification as the suspect in this homicide and his apprehension are a testament to the dedicated and diligent work of officers and deputies assigned to the case,โ€ said Capt. Christian Sigel, commander of the Rapid City Police Department Criminal Investigations Division. โ€œWe will not let violent acts like this one become normalized in our community.โ€

The investigation continues and police ask that anyone with information about the shooting call them at 605-394-4131. An anonymous tip can also be submitted by texting the letters โ€˜RCPDโ€™ and the information to 847411.
