Shallow water at Bear Butte Lake results in fish kill

STURGIS, S.D. – Drought conditions have again taken a toll on the fish at Bear Butte Lake this winter.

Local residents reported hundreds of dead fish scattered across the shorelines of the lake located northeast of Sturgis.

When the lake froze over this winter, the shallowness of the water deprived fish of room – resulting in a winter kill.

Residents report catfish, northern pike, and walleye among the fish kill.
