IERRE, S.D. – Three schools in South Dakota have been designated as National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. The honor is given to schools for exceptional academic performance or for their success in closing achievement gaps among student groups.

The schools receiving the recognition are Howard High School, Jones County Middle School, and Warner Elementary School.

Howard High School and Warner Elementary were selected for their high scores in English and mathematics, as well as graduation and attendance rates. Jones County Middle School was recognized for helping students with barriers find success in English, math, and attendance.

“Blue Ribbon status is awarded to schools that demonstrate commitment to excellence for all students,” said South Dakota Secretary of Education Joe Graves. “The work that is being done at Howard High School, Jones County Middle School, and Warner Elementary is a testament to dedicated educators, committed parents, and engaged students who put in the effort to thrive academically, and talented leadership.”

All three schools were commended for their strong community support and unique approaches to education. Howard High School was noted for its community-focused students and a culture that prioritizes academics and volunteerism. The success is seen as a result of a consistent effort across the district’s elementary, junior high, and high school levels, bolstered by parental support.

Jones County Middle School also actively involves families and the community to create an enriching educational environment, with a caring staff committed to each student’s success. Warner Elementary, which joins Warner High School as a Blue Ribbon School, was recognized for its structured literacy and math instruction, small-group interventions, and strong student-family relationships.
